From Cinema to Design: How Cinematography Shapes Our Vision at the Atelier

As a friend of mine would jokingly say: “You never thought this would happen, did you?”

For many years, I have defended the idea that designing the lighting of a space is, in essence, an exercise in Cinematography. It is about thinking of light as a narrative tool, as something capable of creating atmosphere and emotion, exactly as it does in film. But I must admit that, in the beginning, advocating this perspective felt almost too bold. You know those ideas that make us hesitate the moment we say them out loud?

Well, what started modestly, with my first writings on lighting in the world of cinema, has evolved into a solid reality. For the past three years, my work has been on the industry’s radar: I have been receiving advance screeners and exclusive materials from major streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney, Paramount, Apple TV, Nat Geo, and Hulu, allowing me to write analyses and reviews focused on cinematography.

What began as a writing exercise has become one of my greatest professional pleasures. The latest recognition of this journey comes with the 2026 EMMY Awards, for which I am already immersed in reviewing numerous series and episodes submitted for consideration.

Far from being an isolated study, this immersion in the cinematic universe directly informs the work we do at our Lighting Atelier. The dramatic sensitivity, mastery of contrast, and technical sophistication we see on screen are translated every day into the lighting projects we create for our clients. After all, real-world architecture deserves to be illuminated like a great story.

Below is a glimpse of some of the productions we have received for consideration so far.
